The Vision of AutoMedx is to improve triage capabilities and elevate the standard of care in the prehospital market by fielding game changing technologies.

AutoMedx was founded in 2004 by retired military Doctor Col William Wiesmann, James Evans, Alex Pranger and Earl Smith. In his last role in the Army Dr. Wiesmann was the Director of Combat Casualty Care.  In that role he liaised with medics, physicians and the private sector to develop new products that improved triage capabilities and raised the standard of care on the battlefield.

The SAVe, AutoMedx’s first product, was built with support from the Air Force Force Protection BattleLab and the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). The SAVe received FDA clearance in 2007 and CE Mark in 2012.  The SAVe II was funded by DARPA and went into production in 2015.

The company is headquartered in Coppell, Texas. AutoMedx is ISO 13485 certified.

The Army reviews the SAVe Ventilator

Specialist Bryan J. Posey, 68A, Biomedical Equipment specialist, U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency-Utah Reviews the SAVe Ventilator.


The Army is fielding a brand new field expedient ventilator called the Simplified Automated Ventilator or SAVe. This ventilator is being introduced as the new portable ventilating system to medics in the field.


It’s durable, light weight design with an inlet port that is nearly impossible to occlude, makes it ideal for use in Overseas Contingency Operations. The two models currently being fielded will deliver either 600 ml of oxygen per ten breathes or 600 ml of oxygen per 12 breaths. The electronic make up of the unit is equally as simple, and operates in one mode, either on or off.


The unit has two circuit boards, one for the battery charging circuit, and one for the on/off switch and display circuit, making this medical device an easy unit to repair for biomedical equipment specialists. The durability of this unit extended the maintenance interval from other ventilators from semi-annual to annually, reducing maintenance costs and equipment down time. It’s as simple as connecting the vent to a test lung via the patient circuit, and then connecting it to a computer with the new view software and copying your summary to the manufactures specific test sheet.


Units are now more efficient in the field, rather than having a medic manually operate the bag valve mask (also known as a BVM or Ambu bag) on a wounded Soldier, the medic can connect the SAVe “plug and play” style, and move on to the next patient but, the SAVe still must be monitored. This ventilator is an excellent piece of medical equipment that will help save lives on the battlefield.

AutoMedx opens Texas Production Facility

Flower Mound TX – To accommodate significant increase in demand, AutoMedx has opened a 15,000 square feet manufacturing, sales and marketing facility in Flower Mound, Texas. The plant is located 3 miles north of the Dallas / Ft Worth International airport. Sales, marketing and production will be based in the new facility. Research and development will remain at AutoMedx’s Germantown, Maryland facility.

“Due to its strategic position for transportation, distribution and logistics, Texas provides an ideal manufacturing location. This new space will accommodate increased demand for the SAVe Ventilator as well as future products,” commented James Evans, President & CEO of AutoMedx.

William P. Wiesmann MD, Co-founder and Board Member

Dr. Wiesmann served as the Director for Combat Casualty Care at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command Post, at Ft. Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. He retired from the Army as a full colonel in 1997. Throughout his military career, Dr. Wiesmann led the design and development of novel technologies for improved battlefield survival, including many devices and techniques that are now the standard of care for the US Military.

Dr. Wiesmann is a member of University of Cincinnati Biomedical Engineering Advisory Board, and a member of the National Council at the Washington University School of Medicine. He previously served as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Tissue Engineering Center, the Board of Councilors at the University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering, and the Board of Trustees at Harvey Mudd College.

Dr. Wiesmann graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, and earned his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Wiesmann has over 50 publications in scientific literature, and has a total of 45 patents awarded and pending.

James D. Evans, Co-Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Evans has spent the last 16 years serving in a senior management capacity at technology companies. Prior to co-founding AutoMedx, Mr. Evans served as Chief Executive Officer of Webshare Publishing, which provided a suite of grassroots management software tools that enabled large geographically dispersed organizations to mobilize peer-to-peer campaigning. That business was successfully sold to the American Federation of Labor.

Mr. Evans worked for HemCon Medical Technologies, where he wrote a private placement memorandum and helped raise $5 million of investment capital. He provided counsel to the CEO and Board of Directors on a number of strategic and financial issues. Prior to that, Mr. Evans co-founded a pan-European B2B e-commerce company focused on Life Science, which grew to 100 people in four countries. As Director of Marketing and Product Development, he helped set strategic and tactical direction. He has played a key role in raising $30 million of capital. Mr. Evans earned his MBA from Harvard and graduated in the top 5% of his class at the University of Virginia, where he studied Business Administration.
